From now on until the end of the war, we will get to read every day about what our enemies plan to do with us after our defeat. As impartial voices, the authors cite the two pro-Nazi newspapers in Switzerland, Die Tat and Das Vaterland. It is clear that Jewry, which we have mistreated so badly, is determined to get revenge of the Old Testament sort. If they had their way, as many Germans would be murdered as we killed Jews in cold blood in Poland and Russia. Captain S., who’s in command of a train station in Poland, told me that every day a freight train arrived with around 50 cars full of Jews who were gassed and then burned. As per the Führer’s orders, these trains had priority over Wehrmacht transports. During our advance into Russia, a so-called special commando was sent to corps staff in Velizh. As one of the leaders told my roommate Lieutenant Colonel Kohlscharfer, their task was to get rid of all the Jews. In a small town behind the frontlines, from which they had just arrived, they had killed 200 Jews. That is the truth, which unfortunately is not widely known in Germany. And in light of such horrors, which are unheroic, unmilitary, and absolutely un-German, it would be repulsive, indeed nauseating to start moaning about our fate should we be defeated.

Not much new from the fronts. We destroyed almost all of an air force landing division that the English managed to deploy near Arnheim. The newspapers are reporting on this as though it meant that the danger of an enemy invasion from Holland to northwestern Germany were now over. Of course, the elimination of a division is a triumph, but it’s hardly decisive enough that everything is now “stable.” It was a coup de main, nothing more, nothing less.

As I’ve already written, the English and Americans will have to send over a great number of divisions before they achieve their great breakthrough. But as soon as runways for large bomber squadrons have been built in France, we’ll be so blanketed from the air that it will make the difference.

D. E., a doctor in Aalen who visited me yesterday, told me the following, which I am recording here:

Not all too long ago, the Führer supposedly told a highly decorated officer100 and his bride—the story came from the bride—that the people didn’t know how close to victory they were! There’s no need to say any more.

A manufacturer, a long-time party member, told D. E. he should visit him some time and that he would hear some news that would cheer him up. When he did that, the manufacturer said that infantrymen were being issued small handheld boxes. If you pushed a button, planes would fall down out of the sky and tanks would be suddenly frozen in their tracks.
